The Hornsey Co-operative Housing Project

The Hornsey Group’s exciting project for ten timber houses in a leafy railway cutting near Turnpike Lane is being considered for approval by Haringey Council in September and a bid for capital funding in October. It is a Segal method design by Robin Hillier (for Architype), with Solon CHS as the housing association partner. The exhibition of the plans on 12th July was very well attended by local residents – including families who have applied for the vacancies in the group.

Tilbury Self Build Project, Darwin Road, Tilbury, enabled ten young unemployed people to build their own homes and also provided NVQ training.

The scheme, which was supported by New Essex Housing Association, a subsidiary of New Islington and Hackney Housing Association was successful in helping the self builders find paid work and realized many of the positive benefits associated with self build.

Cliff Hughes, Young People's Development Officer, New Essex Housing Association commented; ‘Everyone gained something from the experience, it wasn’t just an employment or housing project – we all learned so much along the way. It managed to meet everyone’s needs’.
