Funding Boost for Community Self Build London
Self Build London (CSBL), a joint initiative between the Community Self Build Agency and the Walter Segal Self Build Trust, has been awarded three year funding by the Community Fund to enable it to facilitate more self build schemes across the Capital.
This is the second round of funding from the Community Fund and it reaffirms Community Fund interest in the work of CSBL. ‘Interest in London in Community Self Build has doubled in the past year, and it is wonderfully heartening to have the Community Fund backing us through the long haul of making it happen on site.’ said Nicholas Taylor, Director of CSBL. ‘We are working with grassroots groups and their housing association partners to create a rich mix of affordable homes, eco design, skills training and community development. The pilot projects can now become production models of self-help and sustainability.’

Self Build wins Design Award
A self build project involving young unemployed people in housing need, supported by New Essex Housing Association, a subsidiary of New Islington and Hackney Housing Association has won a prestigious Housing Design Award.
The self build project at Darwin Road, Tilbury, was designed by architects Sergison Bates and provided NVQ training and 10 self build homes. The judges of the Housing Design Awards were particularly impressed by its ‘innovative mix of social and physical regeneration’. This project has been highly successful in assisting the self builders to find paid work.
